Micro=Guider I Works

Ray Jun 29, 2003

Hi Bill,

Over the weekend, I was able to get our Micro-Guider Mark-I to respond to the
capital letter "Q" sent by HyperTerminal. MG-I also responded in a promising
way to control from ECU as well as Guide 8. I'm not satisfied with the
accuracy, but that may be due to flexure in the encoder brackets, slippage of
the encoders, or bad choice of encoder resolutions. A movement of the 'scope
*did* result in a movement (in the same direction) of the telescope symbol on
the PC screen. This tells me that our physical connections and the
electronics are all in reasonably good shape. We are building better encoder
brackets and we can tweak the resolutions.

Of all the displays, the one presented by Guide is the best because it can be
seen easily from ten to 15 feet away when the user is on a platform near the
eyepiece and the PC is on a desk in the dome room. In my conversations with
David Lane, he was unable to tell me whether MG-I and Guide are compatible
because he says he is unfamiliar with Guide. Can you tell me whether Guide 8
should properly respond to the outputs from MG-I? If not, is there any chance
that you would issue a patch to permit full compatibility with the Mark I
Micro-Guider?

Thanks for your help,
