Given that, I was able to diagnose and fix the problem by
adding two lines of code.

Arild, thinking back on it, I think this is the first
time I've expended _any_ effort to ensure that the Guide 8
software would work with Guide 7 disks. My hope is that
people using it in this manner will look at the software,
see some nifty new features, but will also see that many of
those features don't work due to lack of the right disks.
Sometimes, this persuades them that it is worth $30 to
upgrade, to get _all_ of the new features.

This happens rarely, so I put little effort in keeping
the Guide 8 software compatible with old disks.
