star 'layering'

Lawrence Harris Feb 22, 2003

I don't know how best to describe the problem that I have encountered,
but it occurs when I download extra stars from the Internet to
supplement what is already present. When I compare my CCD images to the
Guide display, I have recorded many more stars. So I then download A2.0
from the Net. I already have A2.0 disks but this is easier to apply!
Extra stars become visible, but I may still see more in my image. So I
then download the DSS file. When all is in, what I then see is that
some stars from previous catalogues 'disappear'. It is as if the
different catalogued stars are layered so that you can only see one
layer at a time and not the whole group. When I saw this happening, I
then tried 'remove' and this appeared to fix the problem. I want to see
the magnitudes of selected stars.

Can someone explain what is happening here? I have checked the manual
but it does not refer to whether all known stars are displayed or only
those from a 'selected' catalogue.

TIA
