First off: Rich, thanks for mentioning the G2V dataset. I've
added a link and a few words about it to

The G2V TDF file will work if you insert this line just before
the "shown" one:
goto spaces # Ignore extra spaces in 'go to'
Otherwise, Guide would require a full six-character entry. For
example, the first object would be " 80" (four spaces, two
digits). After adding the above line, telling Guide to disregard
such spaces, you can enter "80" and be all set.

As Rich pointed out, that entry is a HIP number (for example,
the above case is HIP 80). So you _can_ simply use "Go To.. Star...
Hipparcos." Obviously, such tricks don't work for most datasets,
but they do for this one... we might as well enjoy the fact.
Tom, an addendum to Bob Elliott's reply about showing the
meridian: while in the Grids dialog box, you should also check
the Alt/Az radio box.
As an alternative, you can edit the file 'horizon.dat'. This is
usually just intended to show trees, houses, etc. around the
horizon, to provide a frame of reference, but you can add in the
following lines near the top to persuade Guide to "connect" thirteen
points, running from the northern horizon up to the zenith and down
to the southern horizon at fifteen-degree intervals. A description
of what all this means, and of how to create other objects, is given
at the end of 'horizon.dat'.
