Gino, for the Jovian events, you _could_ lie to Guide
about where the Great Red Spot is. For example, if you
wanted times for a feature at longitude 123 degrees (System
II), you could tell Guide that the GRS was at that longitude.
This _would_, however, only work for System II objects
(not too far from Jupiter's equator, where System I ought to
be used), and doesn't help on other planets at all. (Gino
mentioned Mars, but every now and then, you hear about
features being seen on Saturn at thus-and-such longitude.)
I should mention one other idea of which I think well:
a table of sunrise/sunset times for lunar features. (Or,
perhaps, just adding sunrise/sunset times in the "Go To...
Planet Features" option. In this case, you could click on
the feature name to center on, say, Plato; or you could
click on its sunrise time to reset Guide's clock to the
time of sunrise at Plato, while centering on Plato. It
would help that Guide could now sort such tables on
sunrise/set time, so you could say, "Hey! Feature X
is about to reach the terminator", and so forth.)
Jeff's article about observing Mars using the 24" Clark
also discusses a possible record for meaningless
department-store-like magnification, using the long-focus
Clark plus some Barlows and short-focus eyepieces, of
534,520x (resulting in Mars appearing as a blur, of
course!) Coincidentally, I was asked a few days ago about
having Guide show an "equivalent magnification", giving an
idea of how the view on the monitor relates to one in an
eyepiece. (I may add this as an option in the legend.)
If you're sitting 30 inches away from a 15-inch monitor,
so the screen subtends 1/2 radian as seen from your eyeball
(about 30 degrees), and you're at the level 20 default of
one arcsecond, you've got a "magnification" of 108000x.
Tasco and Bushnell, eat your hearts out.
However, you can adjust level 20 to be as small as a
milliarcsecond, bringing it up to 108 million-fold
magnification. I suppose I _could_ revise Guide a bit to
show sunspots on distant stars...
