Roger, there is indeed a way to get Guide to show such viewpoints.
It's not especially well-documented, but is described at

The specific case you mention, of viewing the solar system from
above (or below) the ecliptic, is discussed a bit at

I do want to make it easier to create such viewpoints. They're
especially important with the ability to create animations, where
you might want to (as in the above case) show the Trojan
asteroids as seen from above, or the planets as seen from
some other odd angle, or the view from Voyager 2 as it zipped
by the gas giants.
