Which toolbar option? Do you mean the Go to | Object name... menu item?
If I enter just "457" in that dialogue, Guide will center on asteroid 457.
Enter "ngc 457" gives the desired result, however.

Hmmm... have you added your own toolbar buttons for this? In that case, you may
have mixed up something.
