Hi,

why al this trouble with CD-Rom-simulating software?
I just copy the whole CD to a directory on my hard-drive, and then change
the "drive"-statement (in the "startup.mar"-file). Instead of the usual d:/
or e:/ (or whatever your CD-Rom-letter is), it now shows something like
"c:/astro/guide7" (the directory where you put it).

It even works in a small network (I use it at my work, Public Observatory
MIRA): the files are on the file-server, but the program can be run on 3
"workstations".

P.S.: I know I should not do that (technically I should be buying one copy
for each computer), but its a great way of promoting Guide. Once our
volunteers are used to Guide at the observatory, they'll buy it for their
home-computers. So please forgive me Bill ;-)

thanks for your detailed Guide 8 information. You mentioned that putting
Guide on a hard drive is "a somewhat clumsy system". I use a program
that
simulates one or more CD-ROM drives on my hard disk ("Virtual CD-ROM";
another program called "FakeCD" works in a comparable manner). After
copying the Guide-CD on the hard drive I "put" it in the virtual CD-ROM-
drive and start the setup procedure. Guide will be installed without any
problems and runs completely from my hard drive. It´s a very practical
way
especially if you want to use Guide with your notebook (CD-ROM-drives
use
storage batteries in a very intensive way !)
