USB-to-RS232 trouble/new lunar atlas project

I've been slow to answer because I didn't really _have_ any good
answer. I'd heard from one other USB-to-RS232 user, who had the
same problem. All I'd been able to do was scratch my head.

But a bit of extra Google searching turned up a USB-to-RS232
manufacturer who was good enough to post source code for controlling
such a beast. This code was virtually identical to my own, with a
few differences that I don't really understand but probably account
for the trouble. The next update I post should work, not only with
"normal" COM ports, but with these USB-to-RS232 gadgets.

Jeff Medkeff has an excellent article about a project to digitize
the LPL Consoldated Lunar Atlas made in the late 50's with the
Catalina 61 inch telescope near Tucson.
