If you go to a FOV of about ten arcminutes or so, then ask for a
DSS image (either from a RealSky CD or from the Internet), the
diffraction spikes (plus a sort of "halo" at a radius of 5.6 arcminutes)
should be apparent.
I've considered adding assorted sorts of "realistic" star display to
Guide, including diffraction spikes on bright stars. This might include
options for four vs. three-vane spiders. I suspect it might not be the
most popular addition I've ever made to Guide, though!
