Variable star posn/Charon trouble
Bill J Gray Mar 31, 2002
Hi Steve,
Moving variable stars (or stars in general) is not really possible
in Guide. The folks working on GCVS have updated some positions to
have arcsecond (instead of arcminute) accuracy, but they're going
constellation by constellation, starting with Andromeda and reaching
(to date) Camelopardalis.
In crowded fields, including this one, there's no real way to
tell which star within roughly an arcminute of the GCVS position is
the "intended" one. But AAVSO provides finder charts on-line
(http://www.aavso.org) and via CD-ROM. Using the latter, I dug
up an 'e' chart and was able to match it to a DSS image without any
difficulty (after I remembered that AAVSO charts are inverted, that is.)
I then clicked on "Extras... Get A1.0/A2.0", "Get A2.0 via
Internet", and got all the stars indicated on the AAVSO chart,
including V1028 Cyg. Clicking on that star and asking for "more
info" got me the position
USNO identifier: 1425_10203189
RA: 20 00 56.49 (J2000)
declination: +56 56 37.4
So... you can get the star to display, yes, but only as an
"ordinary" A2.0 star.
As to Charon failing on Win2000: it's _probably_ not a Win2000
related issue. You don't mention which file is missing, but if it's
DOS4GW (with a "stub exec failed" message), the answer is given at
http://www.projectpluto.com/faq_curr.htm#charon_failure
