Hi folks,

Something I neglected to mention in my previous post: there is
also a list of mutual eclipses/occultations of Jupiter's moons on
the site, in the .ETB format suitable for use in Guide, at

If you download the file provided therein to your Guide directory,
you can click on "Extras... Miscellaneous Tables", and see
"Jupiter Mutual Sat. Events 2002" listed. Click on this, and
you'll get a listing where you can click on any event to have
Guide reset the date/time and screen center to show that event.
Zoom in on events marked "P", "A", or "T", and you will see
a chunk nicked out of the satellite by the other satellite.

One particularly nice event: take a look at the 7 January 2003
eclipse of Io by Europa, at 9:29:02 UT. This event occurs in front
of Jupiter, so you would see the shadows of the two satellites
cast on Jupiter, with that of Io racing to catch up with Europa.
Eventually, it catches up, and Io slides under Europa's shadow,
and the shadows cast on the planet merge together. (At the same
time, Io becomes much darker and suddenly should be much
more readily observable.) Then Io pulls ahead, gets out from under
Europa's shadow, and races toward the far end of Jupiter.
