When in the CCD frame dialog box, the selected color is indeed not applied.
But it is if I unckeck and re-check the "Display CCD frame" check box.

With Ben, I also have a preference for smaller "X" asteroids markings (I even
have set "59 gal size 10 4 0 0" in startup.mar, and I find the display more
pleasing this way).
