The solution I use for our magazine (I put a nice double-page map - 420x297
mm- in the center of our last issue, which was really appreciated, so that's
why I was working on the next issue just this afternoon) is to print a
.pdf-file.
You'll need Adobe Acrobat Writer (which is -unfortunately- not freeware as
is the Acrobat Reader).

Instead of printing to your printer, it prints to a .pdf-file (you get an
extra printerdriver in the print-menu, just as you would get when installing
a second printer), that can be imported by most DeskTopPublishing software.
You can also import it with software like PhotoShop or (I presume)
PaintShopPro, after which you can save it as a .bmp, or .gif, or...

On my system, I get a huge image: 4676 by 3202 pixels, in color, and really
nice-looking. Only a few things are missing: some figures outside of the
map-border (declination).

I've tried several solutions: multiple monitor (two videocard, making a
virtual desktop 3200 by 1200 pixels) exporting to PostScript (easy to do in
Guide) but none of these works really good.

I wonder if there is some freeware alternative to Acrobat Writer (we've got
it at the Observatory, but it's really not cheap)? I really like
.pdf-images, since they're vector-based (and not pixel-based).

If you want, I can send you an example (227 kb gif-image). If people are
interested, I can put it temporarely on the web. Just let me know...


And I admit that a real "auto-function" for starnames would be a big
improvement. It's been one thing I'm complaining about for years, but never
wrote about on the list.
So Bill, You'll allways have things to improve ;-)
