Hi folks,

I sent out the two master CDs for Guide 8 to the factory yesterday
(Monday, 7 January), along with the electronic version of the user
manual. No word yet on how soon I can expect to see disks and manuals;
in the past, it's taken anywhere from days to about three weeks. I
should be able to get more info about the schedule in the next few days.

While I'm waiting for the disks and manuals to be mass-produced,
I'll be sending out upgrade offers via e-mail. I'll first have to spend
a few days cleaning up the customer database and rigging up Eudora to
allow such a mass-mailing.

Full details on the new version are at:

I'm new to this list, but I wanted to know how Guide 8 differs from StarryNight Pro,
and is it a guide of the night sky. Like I said, I'm unfamiliar. Thanks for the help.

It would be nice to merge both!!!! precision and picture...
maybe G8 will have improved.... I'm supposed to get the upgrade free with G7...

Hi

Here is my opinion of the ongoing discussion of various alternative
astronomical programs: Yes, there is other software around that
can plot
the Tycho star catalog, the SAO or the GSC and various . But I
think that the most important feature of Guide compared to these
products
is its enormous flexibility. There is nearly nothing you cannot do
with it, its file formats are open and well documented (or else you
can always ask Bill for some binary file formats), and it is very
easy to link own data with Guide.

I have Guide and TheSky (Software Bisque). I find that Guide handles the
USNO database much more efficiently. I regularly display this data using
Guide. With TheSky, it is another story altogether. When the option is set
to display USNO stars, it is like my computer is filled with molases.
Therefore I regularly run TheSky with the USNO stars turned off. Also, for
finding asteroids, TheSky cannot compare with Guide.

In my humble opinion, Guide is the far better stand-alone program. However,
I often use TheSky when doing CCD photography because of the neat interface
with CCDSoft. If I find an object with TheSky, then the CCDSoft image will
automatically be stamped with RA & DEC pulled from TheSky. Also there are a
couple of neat add-on's. TPoint improves pointing accuracy, and works
seamlessly with TheSky, and there is a scripting program, Orchestrate, that
I am learning to use, and which can automate much CCD observing--I do
primarily supernova search. So, while TheSky cannot hold a candle to Guide
in many respects, the other programs that work seamlessly with it make it
attractive.

I usually run both programs: using TheSky to point the telescope and
acquire the image (via CCDSoft) and Guide to display USNO stars and RealSky
images to compare what I have just taken with past images of the same
galaxy.

Hi Pat-

I too enjoy Guide quite a lot and since I don't do any imaging as of yet I
don't see the need to carry a laptop around with me and ruin my dark
adaptation- I don't exploit Guide as much as I should but I'm too cheap to
buy a laptop or The Sky anyway. But I've been tempted a couple of times to
try out the "MEC" feature of Guide with my Tangent-based digital setting
circles to see if the additional modeling improves my setup's pointing
precision. I know a couple of guys using T-point and another using a Gemini
setup on his Mountain Instruments GEM and they're pretty happy with the
gains vs. the hassles of further refining their alignments.

I don't know if your setup allows testing but I wonder if you've used Bill's
system as offered at http://www.projectpluto.com/scope.htm#MEC. I'm curious
but a bit too lazy to give it a try myself as I'd have to borrow a laptop or
drag a desktop system out to the yard.

Regards,
Bill Dean

Hi Bill,
No, I haven't tried Bill's system. To tell the truth, I'm still on the
"learning curve" of the other software. But I might try out Bill's system
in the future. Once I did a software "combination." I forget the asteroid,
but there was one that was whizzing by fairly fast and close last year, and
they put up the coordinates for us Guide users. So I got the telescope up
and running using "brand x," and syncrhonized on a star. Then I shut that
program down, and told Guide to "slew program" to where the scope was. It
worked! Then I told Guide to slew the scope to where the asteroid was, and
it did! (All this with an AP1200 mount, which has codes similar to
Meade, I believe.)

Thanks Pat!

Sounds promising so I suppose I'll give it a whirl some Moon-filled night. I
think my homemade encoder hardware is going to be the limiting factor but
anything that helps me to get more obs in nights at home is a good thing.

Bill Dean

I have to admit that as both a new Guide user and somewhat of a beginner in
astronomy (I can find *most* of the major constellations and/or asterisms and
generally point out the brighter of the planets), I'm slightly overwhelmed by
the Guide. I've used Starry Night Pro for a number of years before I puchased
my XT6. It's nice to fire up SNP and take a quick look at what the local sky
looks like.

I've been feeling my way through the various options availble with Guide and
I'm sure I'm coming nowhere near using all of the power that's available.
I'd really like to see some more tutorials, either as part of the release
CD's or online on the web.

Jerry,
I'm an "old guy" (53). I started learning my stars when I was 11. My
Dad was a B-47 pilot, and he had to learn some stars for navigation, and he
started pointing some of them out to me. When I was 14 I completed a 6"
telescope (alt-ax mount, and no finder), and received a copy of Norton's
Star Atlas as a present. If I wanted to find some globular or galaxy I had
read about, the only way was to learn what constellation it was in and aim
the telescope at the approximate position, then sweep till I found it.
Finding the object was confirmation that I had in fact located the right
constellation! I became surprisingly adept at putting the 1 degree field
near the desired object.
Now that I use software to locate my objects, I find some much more so
fast (I would never go back to the "old way"). But I don't have near as
intimate a knowledge of the sky. For example, I can point a flashlight
right at M92 (one of my objects from the "old days") but I don't have a clue
about NGC 247 except that it is "somewhere" in Cetus.
In the early 80's I was a visitor to the USNO, a member of the last tour
group to go through one evening. The last scope on the tour was a 12"
refractor that the astronomers had restored for their "personal" use. At
the end of his presentation the guiding astronomer said he was in no hurry
to leave, and asked if there was anything we would like to see, and several
of us started naming favorite objects. He asked for coordinates, and we all
laughed; we were "star hoppers." So we had to stick our heads outside the
dome to orient myself to the sky, and he let us point the big telescope.
Occasionally I find it fun to leave the dome closed, and to sit out on a
lawn chair with binoculars and a "field guide" (or my old Norton's) and
trace out the constellations. In short, software is great, but keep on
learning your stars.
Clear skies!
Pat

Patrick you are right!!!
Pocketcalculators are great but keep on learning your math.....
Last days a fellow asked me how fast is your mount, not how accurate....
I think what you mean is a general problem today. Fewer people are asking for the roots.
This is dangerous and I thank you for posting such a mail.

Greetings
Waldemar

Jerry,
I'm an "old guy" (53).
Pat

I remember the evening when the disk arrived; I

Hi folks,

I sent out the two master CDs for Guide 8 to the factory yesterday
(Monday, 7 January), along with the electronic version of the user
manual. No word yet on how soon I can expect to see disks and manuals;
in the past, it's taken anywhere from days to about three weeks. I
should be able to get more info about the schedule in the next few days.

While I'm waiting for the disks and manuals to be mass-produced,
I'll be sending out upgrade offers via e-mail. I'll first have to spend
a few days cleaning up the customer database and rigging up Eudora to
allow such a mass-mailing.

Full details on the new version are at:

http://www.projectpluto.com/guide8.htm

I fully agree with all that. To this, add that Guide often is first
with some feature: it was first in including the Guide Star
Catalogue, and later it was first in including the Hipparcos
Catalogue. I think it also was first in including high-precision
ephemerides for natural satellites of the planets.

I'm pretty sure that Megastar came with GSC even when it was
distibuted on floppies (several tens of them!). Guide had it all on
CD from day one, so it clearly was the way to go.

Congrats to Bill for G8! I hope the wait was worth it...

I fully agree with that - and he didn't merely fix bugs but also added
features! Guide 7 today is not the same as Guide 7 when just released.

To this I'd like to add:

3. The possibility to use Guide's data for your own programming
projects, due to the documentation of the formats of the data files.
Few other similar programs provide this kind of documentation.
