I got it working last year with a N5 by following

I built the cable myself from parts from a electical/telco supplier.
Cost about AUD $25. (US$13).

Make sure the gold pins in the plug are pushed all the way into the
wires!

I don't know if this is the same setup as for the GPS 8 and 11 though.
