I guess it's impossible to make stars appear realistic over any wider
magnitude range on a CRT which typically has a dynamic range of
around 100. In Guide it's possible to set the star size smaller than
1 whole pixel which will result in stars being modulated for
brightness instead of size.
I use these these *.mar files for toggling between normal
and "realistic" stars mode. In realistic mode you'll have to pump up
the limiting magnitude a bit. They work reasonaby well for me but I'm
really not sure how well my settings will work for you.
