R: [guide-user] Steve Coe notes/double comets/Guide 8

Claudio Costa Jun 6, 2001

Bill,
I still have a problem with display of some stars: all those which appear
when a low magnitude limit is chosen disappear when I press the + key to get
more faint stars!Could it be related again to the Tycho-2 catalog? The
version of Guide I'm running is the June the 5th.
Regards,
Claudio

Owen, you're right; there is (yet again) a missing file, one used
in this case to figure out which of Steve Coe's "note" files corresponds
to a given constellation. Download this (a little under 1 KByte), and
it ought to start working.

Lawrence, yes, I expect to notify everyone about Guide 8 once it's
reasonably near completion. (Probably pretty soon; the "install to
hard drive" was the last major obstacle, one I needed to overcome in
order to get a two-CD Guide to work at all.) I will first send everyone
a short e-mail, with a reference to a more detailed write-up on my Web
site (one where I hope almost every conceivable question will be answered.)
At that point, I'll be ready to take orders for it; after a bit, I'll
snail-mail anyone who didn't answer the e-mails (plus sending out a lot
of snail-mails to people for whom I lack e-mail addresses). And, of
course, I'll post something about it here as well.

Denis, about the "double comets": yes, that almost certainly is
related to the fact that the comet labelled as "P/Bus" in Guide's built-in
list of comets may appear as "P/Bus (87P)" in the MPC list. The odd
ways in which comet names shift around have been the bane of many
programmers, I suspect. A newly-found comet may start out as (example)
"C/2001 X4", indicating its discovery time; then, not necessarily
right away, a discoverer or discoverers may be designated, and it
becomes something like "Jones-Medvedev (C/2001 X4)". Finally, when
it's determined to be a periodic comet and gets a permanent periodic
designation, it becomes "P/Jones-Medvedev (173P)".

There is a fair bit of code to handle all these oddities in Guide,
but some items still slip past.
