1999 KW4, part II; crashes

Bill J. Gray May 25, 2001

Hi folks,

Hmmmm... at least one problem is apparent: from the 'original
message' quoted by Claude Serquet, it looks as if the orbital
elements in my message got split up across an extra line. Those
elements were in the MPC's "Daily Orbit Update" format, which puts
a full set of elements into a single 80-byte line; break that line
up, and Guide doesn't recognize that it's a valid set of elements.

So let's try again. Following are elements in the more verbose,
multiple-line format also used by MPC... but none of the lines runs
more than 68 characters, so no splitting should occur. Same comments
as to use: save this message as a file, then use "Extras... Add
MPC comets/asteroids", and select that file.

Orbital elements:
1999 KW4
Epoch 2001 Apr. 1.0 TT = JDT 2452000.5
M 30.58500 (2000.0) P Q
n 1.91474563 Peri. 192.59500 -0.00000000 -0.00000000
a 0.6422863 Node 244.94500 +0.00000000 -0.00000000
e 0.6884100 Incl. 38.89500 +0.00000000 -0.00000000
P 0.51 H 16.6 G 0.15

Claude also mentions: "...Entering 'J99K04W' makes Guide crash..."
It ought to simply not work; when Guide imports these elements, it
deciphers MPC's packed designation into a user-readable one (in this
case, 1999 KW4). I think the crash is related to the problem
mentioned by Pierre Desjardins, of getting odd asteroid magnitudes
when running without the CD. I have figured that one out and fixed it,
and it will go away the next time I post an update.
