It sounds to me like you have a problem with your video driver or win98.

Try using Guide with 256 colors and see if you get the same results. If it
works, you may have a video problem, driver more than likely. If it still
fails, look at a Win98 problem or other programs installed lately but keep
in mind the video driver might still be the issue.

This is difficult to solve with the information.
