'Minimal' install/quasars auf Deutsch

Bill J. Gray Mar 10, 2001

Richard, about the failure when doing a 'minimal' installation to the
hard drive: Please send me, via private e-mail, your STARTUP.MAR file.

I thought it possible that I'd done something recently to ruin minimal
installs, but I just tried it without trouble. Most likely, you've got
some setting set that I don't. Given your STARTUP.MAR, I ought to have
a shot at duplicating the problem you're seeing.

Meinhof, about "Quasars don't speak German": I tried this and
saw the same problem. The reason is that the quasar catalog used by
Guide 7.0 has gone through some updates. The first few batches of
CD-ROMs used the catalog of Veron and Veron-Cetty, version 7 (which
was, at the time, the latest version of that catalog). Later batches
of Guide disks use the newer Veron & Veron-Cetty, version 8. (V & VC is
also the source for BL Lac and active galactic nuclei (AGN) data, so
those catalogs are also affected by all this.)

At the time, I just wanted to make sure Guide used the latest and
greatest quasar/BL Lac/AGN catalogues. I didn't really think through
what might happen in Guide when you swap languages. You may, or may
not, see trouble now when you switch to certain languages. (Which ones
cause trouble depends, in part, on which 'language update' .ZIPs
you've downloaded from the Web site. Some people see no trouble at all.)

I don't really expect to unsnarl all this, but I have a workaround.
We now have access to Veron and Veron-Cetty version _9_, with thousands
of new quasars added and some objects updated/fixed (and, of course,
the dataset I'll be using in Guide 8.0). See here:

http://www.projectpluto.com/extras.htm#Quasar_update

for information on downloading this dataset and using it in Guide.
You will then have no language troubles, _and_ you will have better
quasar/BL Lac/AGN data.

(You will notice that I've just claimed that a "bug fix" is really
an "improvement to Guide's quasar database". Perhaps I should get a
job in public relations at Microsoft?)
