Hi John,
It easily could have been a file going astray. If nothing else,
the 'Guide 9.0' on the title bar suggests that the executable was the
old one. If another file (add_mpc.hee) also wasn't updated, you'd
have been trying to get MPC data from their old site (the one that
got hacked a few years back). And there's also a separate utility
used for file downloads, which I think may have had some "issues"
where it could get in a weird loop... using the current version
should (and apparently did) fix that sort of trouble.
Thanks for the follow-up. If I hear about this from somebody else,
I'll suggest the usual "apply the current update and see what happens"
method. (I actually suggest that a lot for random, unreproducible
behavior... it's often quite effective. Sort of a variant on "turn it
off and on again" or "hit it with a stick and see if that resets it.")
