I ran into this some years ago, as did Stephen Tonkin. He figured out
that the issue was a missing Symbols font (file 'symbol.ttf').

Install that font, and you should be all set. I know little about OS/X, but
I think you could probably just install the font without needing to copy it
manually.

I've been running Guide on various Linux boxes, under Wine. With that setup,
as far as I've seen, everything works, and the symbol font is now provided
out of the box. Apparently, that's not true on OS/X... I get the impression,
from the Wine site, that support on OS/X for Wine is slightly limited, so you
may see other problems. Please let me know if you do.
