Both seem to be right.

I checked that one with Guide 7, Planets on full precision. Strange thing! When starting on 1977-Jan-1 and letting
find Guide an eclipse, it did not find any, but a conjunction in 21st January 1977. When starting after that day
Guide actually finds an eclipse. Cape town is in the area of occultation, whereas Perth is a bit outside and India is far
outside the eclipse area. Are you sure that people observed and these sites the occultation by the planet and not only
by its rings?

It is sure. The occultation was also observed by a plane which followed the shade zone at 9,000 meters of altitude. In this opportunity also the  the Uranus rings was discoverd.
