You can tell Guide to display artificial satellites using files of orbital elements ("TLEs", or "two-line elements"). If you've already downloaded or created your own file of TLEs, you can click on the following line; Guide will then prompt you to select that file, and will then display satellites from it. ^Click here to select a TLE file from your hard drive//!2118^ Guide can also fetch TLEs from various ftp sites. Clicking on the following lines will cause Guide to get one of the more popular element sets (from ^www.tle.info//xhttp://www.tle.info/data^) and to switch to showing artificial satellites from it. ^Get 'visual.tle' (about 19 KBytes)//dhttp://www.tle.info/data/visual.txt visual.tle;a2118,visual.tle^ ^Get 'all_tle.txt' (about 522 KBytes)//dhttp://www.tle.info/data/ALL_TLE.ZIP all_tle.zip;r4unzip -o all_tle.zip;a2118,all_tle.txt^ ^Get 'tle.txt' (about 64 KBytes)//dhttp://www.tle.info/data/TLE.ZIP tle.zip;r4unzip -o tle.zip;a2118,tle.txt^ 'All_tle.txt' is the most comprehensive dataset, with elements for about 9000 satellites. If you are only interested in bright objects, 'visual.tle' should be sufficient. 'tle.txt' falls somewhere between these extremes. Most TLEs lack magnitude data, and some lack names as well (the satellites are identified solely by catalog number). You can remedy these problems with an auxiliary file. ^Click here for name and magnitude data//dhttp://www.io.com/~mmccants/programs/qsmag.zip qsmag.zip;r4unzip -o qsmag.zip;ucache\temp.3le^ (about 50 KBytes). It's important to update your TLEs from time to time. Unfortunately, it's very hard to say just how often; it depends on how much precision you need, how often the satellite in question maneuvers, and where the satellite happens to be (some orbits are more "stable" than others.) For some purposes, you may wish to use one of the following element sets. ^Get 'classfd.tle' (about 7 KBytes)//dhttp://www.io.com/~mmccants/tles/classfd.zip classfd.zip;r4unzip -o classfd.zip;a2118,classfd.tle^ Elements for some objects that are not listed by NORAD; these elements were determined from amateur observations.
